With the sustained growth in residential real estate prices in Los Angeles, Echo Park is experiencing a building boom on a scale that hasn’t been repeated since the 1920s and 30s.
Unlike many communities in Los Angeles, Echo Park was once blessed with numerous vacant lots often undeveloped due to the topographical challenges these sites presented. Now, these verdant properties which have contributed to the rustic nature of Echo Park for over almost 120 years are slowly disappearing. While the purchase and development of these lots are a loss for the many, they’re a boon for the few individuals lucky enough to have purchased and who are now building on these rewarding sites.

The Los Angeles Times reports on declining enrollment in neighborhoods where rents and property values have been soaring. Unfortunately this news is a little late for those who owned homes on the proposed Los Angeles Unified School District’s 9A Site. Even though LAUSD was well aware of this downward population trend long ago the school district used fear and intimidation to cajole these longtime residents from a total of 50 housing units. Now Echo Park has boarded up homes where a vibrant community once existed. Previously.

The next Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park meeting on Wednesday, June 7 will focus on the future of Barlow Respiratory Hospital located within Elysian Park.
Attorney Phyl Van Ammers will discuss her research regarding the history of the site and any future potential uses of the hospital grounds.
Please join with other interested individuals to discussing our concerns and potential responses to any proposed development at this historic site and establish a working group that will work to affect the final disposition of this City of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument (HCM-504).

EchoPark.Net is back with a blog-powered 7th version of the Echo Park community website.
First off I want to thank Angeleno Heights resident David Gee for setting up the WordPress software on my server! David’s offer of assistance ended the hiatus and motivated me to sit down and figure out how to manipulate, through trial and a lot of error, the CSS code that I’ve never played with before.

Well it seems that the deep-rooted Barlow Hospital is up for sale. California’s seismic codes will force the brick and mortar main hospital building to shutter its door come 2013. The plan, sell the majority of site to the highest bidder and build a new hospital with the proceeds of the sale on one corner of the property. Apparently several bidders are interested in the site for high density residential development. Unfortunately for them the site is zoned Agricultural and the preponderance of the structures on the site are Los Angeles Cultural Historical Landmarks which protects them from wholesale destruction. While Barlow Hospital has always been a good neighbor, allowing the community unfettered access to Williams Hall for meetings and events it has been obvious for many years that the facilities and structures on the 25-acre site have long been neglected. While several developers and the Los Angeles School District (demolish established communities in the name of education) may have their eyes on Barlow, I believe the communities surrounding the site will have different feelings regarding any drastic changes there. Ken Bernstein of the Los Angeles Conservancy has stated flatly that any changes to the site would be a significant preservation issue for the Conservancy.
Michael Connelly fans, stay tuned, his next bit of fiction is titled Echo Park
Fishbowl LA’s Media Predictions for 2006:
Hot ironic T-shirt slogan in Silver Lake: ‘I [heart] My Prius.’
Hot ironic T-shirt slogan in Echo Park: ‘I Hate Your Prius.’
And finally the Hipster Score: It seems Palm Springs thinks Echo Park is still hip AND chic: For example, in Los Angeles, the neighborhood of Echo Park was never seen as a chic area. Now, it’s one of the hippest locations in that city, he said.
