This Saturday the Echo Park Historical Society will be presenting New Architecture in Echo Park. Four new approaches to thoughtful residential living are to be presented at the future site of the Glendale Blvd Artisan House Lofts. Quinceañera, the 2006 Grand Jury and Audience Award prizewinner at the Sundance Film Festival finally makes it to local theaters on Friday August 4. Echo Park filmmakers Richard Glatzer and Walsh Westmoreland’s were profiled last Sunday in the New York Times.

Once again, geography takes the back seat at the LA Times; while reporting on the upwardly mobile ventures of Dana Hollister the writer claims that Edendale, the Short Stop and Little Joy bars are in Silver Lake.
While I’d debate the correctness of claims that the various Edendale studios were located in Silver Lake, neighbor Tom Chatt has placed an excellent summery of the history of Edendale on Wikipedia. Now we can only hope someone doesn’t come along and mess up his fine work.

So, the closest Michael Connelly will get to Echo Park to promote his new mystery Echo Park is South Pasadena… Maybe, just maybe we can convince him to stop in at the Edendale Library for a reading. Perhaps an early copy of Echo Park will show up in my mail box for a review too, especially when all the Connelly fans start Googling “Echo Park” and they end up here and only find quotes from James Ellroy books!

In honor of the Lotus Festival the Los Angeles City Nerd spent some time searching the LA Times archive for historical tidbits on our beloved community icon the Echo Park Lake. Expanding on the Echo Park Historical Society’s history of the lake the nerd offers up some excellent lake chronicles:
March 16, 1931: there was a proposal to use relief funds to fill the lake from 16-18 feet at the center to 4 feet due the large numbers of drowning deaths from overturned boats. The Angeleno Heights Improvement Assn. protested such action.

New neighbors Steve and Rick (and their backyard yard) will be featured on the premier episode of Urban Outsiders this Wednesday. Apparently their horrifying backyard will be miraculously transformed into a Modern Mediterranean retreat. Catch the episode on HGTV, July 12th at 9.30PM to witness the transformation.
Update: Per the comments below this episode may be on at 6.30PM but it may not be on at all…
