Glen Echo Park

Begun in 1891 as an idealistic attempt to create a National Chautauqua Assembly “to promote liberal and practical education,” the park became instead the area’s premier amusement park from 1898-1968.

Today, the park has come full circle, offering year-round educational activities, while two amusement-era destinations (the Spanish Ballroom and Dentzel Carousel) remain major attractions.

The attractive and marvelous Echo Park of Los Angeles

Echo Park is a neighborhood in Los Angeles northwest of downtown. According to the website “Historic Echo Park” the neighborhood has no official boundaries or borders. Generally, it is east and southeast of Silver Lake, north of Westlake/MacArthur Park, west and northwest of Chinatown and southwest of Elysian Park. Echo Park itself consists of the neighborhoods of Echo Park (the area immediately surrounding the lake and extending approximately a mile north on Echo Park Avenue), Angelino Heights, Colton Hill, Edendale, Sunset Heights, Temple-Beaudry and Elysian Heights. Dodger Stadium lies at the eastern edge of Echo Park. On October 8, 2008 Echo Park was named one of America’s “Great Communities” by the American Planning Association. (more…)

Echo Park & Silver Lake get a gang injunction

A Los Angeles judge on Tuesday approved a preliminary gang injunction against the Temple Street gang, which claims the southern edge of Silver Lake and Echo Park. Nearly 40 gang injunctions, which restrict the activities of gang members, have been used to in other parts of the city. This is the first gang injunction to cover Echo Park and Silver Lake. The Temple Street injunction names more than 250 members, which KCBS reports are subject to a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew and other restrictions within in a one-square-mile area:

It all started with the ostriches. Well, not really, but don’t you think it should have? In fact, Griffith Park started with a curse. When the original owner of Griffith Park, Don Antonio Feliz died of small pox in 1863, he left his extensive land holdings to Don Antonio Coronel. Subsequently, his blind, destitute 17 year old niece, Dona Petronilla, cursed the land — great misfortune would come to whoever owned it.
