A home designed and built the late architectural photographer Maynard L. Parker will be one of the featured properties at this year’s Historic Echo Park Home Tour on Sunday, Nov. 12.

The year’s theme, “The Bohemian Havens of Elysian Heights” reflects the tour’s focus on the northern edge of the neighborhood, where secluded canyons and steep hillsides have served as refuge and inspiration to generations of artists.

The self-guided tour will feature 10 properties ranging from nearly century old bungalows to mid-century cottages to Spanish colonial compounds. Most of these dwellings continue to serve as home to individuals   involved in artistic fields, including dance, tile making and the entertainment industry.

One of the properties featured on the tour was built by Maynard L. Parker, a prolific photographs whose images were a frequent sight in home décor pages of the Los Angeles Times and other national publications from the 1940s through the early 1970s.  Parker’s photos, which are housed at the Huntington Library, ranged from typical Southern California tract homes to interiors designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The 1940s era home was built out of garage kits that Parker, an Elysian Heights resident who died in 1976, customized with mid-century finishes and styling.

Tour Tickets & Details

The self-guided tour will be held on Sunday, November 12 from 11 am to 4 pm. The tour starts at Williams Hall, 2000 Stadium Way near Dodger Stadium. Tour visitors will pick up tickets, a program and map at Williams Hall before touring the homes in any order they want.

Admission is $20, and tickets can be purchased online at www.HistoricEchoPark.org.

Observed post on friend and neighbor Dave Z, I ran out and grabbed a copy of the November issue of Los Angeles magazine. I laughed out loud when I turned to page 86 and saw Dave’s photo—just as I’d expected—looking like the quote to the left of his image, “David Zahniser, the city hall reporter for the L.A. Weekly, doesn’t look so happy most of the times I see him.”

Well, while the article focuses on Dave Z the City Hall reporter, and does note that he wants people to know that, “…politics is fun and that engaging themselves in the life of the city is fun”, people should know that Dave Z is one of those Echo Park icons that’s always exuding neighborhood pride and sharing his enthusiasm of its history.

Throughout the course of the baseball season only the deep calls of the male owl could be heard after dark and we had feared for the fate of his partner. That all changed this morning when his female mate returned his call with her own soft hoo-hoo hoooooo hoo-hoo. With her return it appears that order has been restored in Elysian Park…at least until next season.

In other Elysian Park bird news, the LA Weekly celebrates the mystery of the Bird Man of Elysian Park.
