Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Recreation and Parks staff has put the finishing touches on the reconstructed Echo Park Lake Bridge, completing their work an entire week before the 29th Annual Lotus Festival.

Deteriorated to the point where it was unsafe to cross, the bridge and island were closed to park users. In the interim, with the exception of the occasional filming or special event, the island has become a de facto bird sanctuary. (more…)

Sad news of two recent deaths of longtime Echo Park activist.

Julie Rosen, artist and founding member of the Citizens Committee to Save Elysian Park succumb to cancer last week. Julie moved to San Francisco last year to be near her children due to her failing health. According to local Michael O’Brien: “That’s right, Pioneer Market, our local community institution, is closing. In its place will be a Walgreen’s in the southern (eastern?) half of the building, and an unidentified “retail space” in the other half. Great travel postcards

Friday, December 4th, 2009

On Thursday morning Echo Park lost one of its hero’s when Ron Emler passed away. Founder of the Echo Park Security Association, cofounder of the Echo Park Improvement Association and co-author of The Ghost of Echo Park, Ron was a tireless advocate for Echo Park. We’ll all miss Ron and his great travel postcards.

Update: Per Ron’s request no formal memorial will be held.

What you see is a couple of days worth of messing around with the look of the site by modifying Sadish Balasubramanian’s very clean C4M theme more to my liking. I’ve retained the blue lake theme but dumped the always disliked blue font. I’ll be manipulating the site some more, making some subtle tweaks here and there and adding a Flickr powered photo sidebar very soon. (more…)
